Campus Budget Hearings
Significant learning points:
I have had the privilege of serving on the
Owens campus budget committee for the past two years. Even though the meetings are open to the
campus community, sitting through the entire set of hearings for two years in a
row has enabled me to better understand the priorities within each division and
for the campus as a whole. I also have
seen the impact of having so many retirement-eligible employees has on the
budget – every time someone retires, we have to pay them for their unused
leave. The amount that has to be
budgeted for this has increased every year for the past several years.
Leadership characteristics enhanced:
#1 - Is open, honest and
exhibits the highest standards of integrity – The budget hearing process is
open and transparent because anyone in the college community can attend. In
addition, this process holds each division and department fiscally accountable.
#8 - Is able to see the "Big Picture" – Participating in the committee has helped me understand the campus priorities (and why I can’t just have another faculty member in my department). I can also see the link between planning, budgeting, and assessment.
