Leadership Resources Review & Discussion
Significant learning points:
In
this seminar, the program participants shared what they learned from reading
their leadership resource. Some of my favorites included:
- Save Your Drama for Your Mama – Leadership is a choice, so you can choose to be in
the leadership triangle or the drama triangle.
Strategies were presented regarding how to get out and stay out of the
drama triangle.
- The Upside of Down – How to use failure to reinvent yourself.
- Leader's Code – Accomplish a worthy mission, pursue character, and serve others before
self.
- Poke the Box – You’re stuck, just get started!
We learn by trying.
Relevance to ideas about leadership:
All
of the books touched on the various qualities of leadership, but mostly they
focused on the importance of being aware of your own behavior, looking for ways
to be more effective, and having the ability to change. By taking time to learn and grow as leaders,
we can help our employees grow and develop into leaders themselves.
Ways to apply learning to current role:
The
book that was most applicable to my current role was Save Your Drama for Your Mama because my office is actually one of 27 cubicles in a large office
area. In this environment, it is way too
easy to get sucked into the drama of other employees and departments. Janelle’s talk about this book reminded me
that leadership is a choice and how I react in these situations either enables
the employee to continue the drama or helps them stop the drama.
