Emotional Intelligence
Significant learning points:
The importance having a high EQ:
- “EQ determines personal success more than
IQ, education, and training.”
- “IQ gets you hired…EQ gets you promoted.”
- Knowing your emotions (self-awareness,
courage & risk-taking, interdependence)
- Managing your emotions (handling adversity,
managing anger)
- Motivating yourself (optimism,
perseverance, resiliency)
- Recognizing emotions in others (observe
behaviors)
- Handling Relationships (treating everyone
with dignity and respect)
Relevance to ideas about leadership:
EQ is central to effective leadership.
Leaders need to be self-aware, good listeners and communicators, risk
takers, and responsive to the needs of their team. EQ is also a key factor in developing and
maintaining productive, meaningful relationships.
Ways to apply learning to current role:
As the math department chair, I have to rely
on my EQ in order to handle all of the faculty and student problems that come
my way. Even if a situation frustrates or angers me, I know I have to control
my emotions to ensure the best possible outcome.
