Generational Differences
Significant learning points:
The
purpose of this seminar was to understand the generational differences and use
this knowledge to create a more supportive and inclusive work environment. Key learning points from each generation
include:
- Silents
(born before 1945): This group is loyal, dependable, detail-oriented, and hard
working. They dislike change and are
uncomfortable with conflict. It’s
important to ask for their ideas and opinions regarding the changes (i.e.,
suggestions for improvement).
- Boomers
(1946 – 1964): This group is highly educated, driven, values personal growth,
likes challenges, and wants to be the authority. They are uncomfortable with conflict,
sensitive to feedback, and can be self-centered.
- Generation
X (1965 – 1980): This group values relationships in that they will do anything
do be loved. They are incredibly ambitious, organized, and self-sufficient, but
they also tend to be skeptical of institutions and wary of commitment. Although they embrace change easily, they are
usually stressed out.
- Millennials
(1981 – 1995): This group is more flexible than other generational groups as
they have continually adapted to changing environments and technology. They are not afraid of failure and value
working in teams. They are motivated to
learn skills and information in order to make their lives less stressful and
more meaningful.
Relevance to ideas about leadership:
As
leaders, we have to treat everyone with dignity, fairness, and respect and
understanding how generational differences influence attitudes and behavior
helps create a more inclusive work environment.
Ways to apply learning to current role:
Although
I am the chair, I am also the youngest member of my department, so I really
appreciated the insights I learned about the silent generation and baby
boomers. This information will also help
me relate better to students when they have complaints because the heart of the
issue may lie in generational differences in expectations between the students
and the teachers.
