Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Survey
Significant learning points:
Through the emotional
intelligence survey, I learned that I have fairly high levels of emotional intelligence
because I scored at either the proficient or optimal level in each area. I believe this is a direct result of multiple
work experiences where I was fortunate enough to have highly emotionally
intelligent supervisors. However, one key area of weakness for me is that I
tend to put off having difficult conversations with members of my team. I realized that it is important that I change
this behavior immediately, because this sort of feedback, while uncomfortable
to give, is essential for that employee to improve. By withholding that feedback, I am doing that
person a huge disservice.
Leadership characteristics enhanced:
The leadership
characteristics that were enhanced through this activity include #2 - Is aware
of self and behavior and #20 - Has the ability to change. Once I took the survey, I took a more
proactive stance on providing more regular feedback to the faculty in my department – both positive and constructive. By increasing the frequency of feedback, it
allowed me to become more comfortable with initiating difficult conversations. I learned to view them as an opportunity to
help someone else grow, rather than simply correcting behavior.
