Mentoring
Significant learning points:
I have had the opportunity to be a
mentor twice, for Michael Buoni and Tamekia Broughton when each was hired as a
new faculty member. Michael was a new
science instructor and Tamekia was hired as the program coordinator for our new
food safety program. Although they were completely different experiences
because of their roles and unique personalities, I thoroughly enjoyed working
with both of them.
Through being a mentor, I learned that new employees need a good “work friend” just as much as they need someone to help them learn the ropes. They need someone who genuinely cares about how they’re doing and is supportive of their needs.

Leadership characteristics enhanced:
#19 - Empowers others – As a mentor, part
of my job was to help them identify resources to help answer their questions
and brainstorm solutions to any difficulties they were having.
