Leadership Philosophy
Significant learning points:
This seminar began by
defining leadership and discussing the difference between leading and
managing. We also discussed how the organizational culture can
influence how you lead. The key functions of leadership include
creating a vision, motivating team members, coping with change, moving
priorities in the right direction, and developing future leaders. We
spent some time discussing the difference between the learner and judger
mindsets and strategies to ask more learner-oriented questions when trying to
solve a problem. The focus of the learner mindset is to make
thoughtful choices, to keep the solution in mind, and to relate to people in a
way that values and respects their opinions.

Relevance to ideas about leadership:
One of the key points of
this seminar for me was that change requires leadership. It is
important for leaders to have a vision for where they want their division to go
and to help direct their team through the associated change. Change
is hard, so good leaders must regularly communicate the vision and priorities
and effectively motivate their team in order to achieve the desired
results.
Ways to apply learning to current role:
The entire math
curriculum is undergoing revision, which will affect every instructional
program and require assistance from multiple divisions to implement
properly. This level of change is going to require leadership, but
first and foremost, I must lead my faculty through the redesign of numerous
courses. I will need to regularly communicate the rationale for the
change as well as the vision for the new courses in order for the redesign to
be completed effectively.
