United Way Campaign
Significant learning points:
As
college-wide chair of the 2013 United Way campaign, I learned that there is an
incredible amount of coordination and communication required in order for
everything to run smoothly. It was
fascinating to see how our DIET and HR teams collaborated with the United Way
in order to make the online giving page possible. (This was also the first time that I realized
that Dr. George didn’t actually write the announcements that were posted under
his name on the MyDTCC portal.) For me,
this campaign highlighted the importance of Delaware Tech employees supporting
the community in a way that is similar to how we ask the business community to
support us.
Leadership characteristics enhanced:
#3 - Has excellent interpersonal and
communication skills – I had to communicate and interact with individuals from
the United Way as well as college-wide personnel across all salary plans.
#5 - Has excellent management skills – I had to manage time, people, and money throughout the process while still keeping up with my regular duties as department chair and campus assessment coordinator.
#6 - Exhibits a strong sense of team spirit – I had to motivate the campus chairs and encourage collegewide participation in the campaign.
#19 - Empowers others – I taught the campus chairs how to troubleshoot issues and answer questions regarding the website.
#18 - Always looks for ways to be more effective – I created Excel spreadsheets to tally and double-check the results when this process had previously been done by hand.
#16 - Strives to "get it right" – I followed up on questions and problems at the campuses to ensure there was a satisfactory resolution.
