Program & Leadership Overview
Significant learning points:
- The
goals and value of the LDP program and discussion of the characteristics of
excellence with Dr. George.
- Discussion
with Dr. Hope Murray of the six traits of effective leaders.
- Make
others feel important by emphasizing their strengths rather than your own.
- Promote
a vision – people need to know where you’re going and why.
- Follow
the Golden Rule.
- Admit
mistakes – if people think you’re covering mistakes, then they will too and
you’ll lose valuable information in the process.
- Praise
publicly, but share criticism in private.
- Stay
close to the action – be visible and ask questions.
- Make
others feel important by emphasizing their strengths rather than your own.
- Dr.
Murray’s “Lessons Learned” such as the importance of being real, understanding
that there’s more than one right answer, taking the stairs, making time to
play, and learning from mistakes.
Relevance to ideas about leadership:
Dr. Murray’s six traits of effective
leaders and “lessons learned” aligns closely with my personal leadership
philosophy because I believe in leading by example, maintaining open
communication, and doing everything I can to support the faculty in my
department.
Ways to apply learning to current role:
- One
of the key values of the LDP program is the opportunity to build relationships
with people in different divisions across all campuses. These relationships will be valuable as I
work on multiple collegewide projects like the United Way Campaign, the PRR,
Collegewide Assessment, and the math redesign.
- I
am going to make a point to share the vision for the collegewide math
redesign. The better they understand why
we’re making changes, the easier it will be to get their buy-in.
