Stakeholder Meetings
Significant learning points:
Mathematics Education Advisory Committee
(11/21/13) – Since this advisory committee is for a “transfer only” program,
members of the committee include representatives from each of the senior higher
education institutions, the Delaware Department of Education, school district
representatives from each county, and past graduates from both the Mathematics
Secondary Education and Middle Level Mathematics Education programs. At this meeting we discussed the effect of
the English curricular changes on our articulation agreements in both programs,
proposed modifications to the Middle Level Mathematics Education program, the
emporium model of instruction, the Common Core State Standards for mathematics,
student learning outcomes assessment data, enrollment and graduation rates, and
the job market outlook for future math teachers. It is clear that the members of this
committee appreciate the opportunity to be involved with Delaware Tech and want
to see our graduates be successful at the senior institutions.
Faculty Council (11/14/14) – Although the primary focus of most faculty council meetings is to share information from administrative council meetings, the purpose of this meeting was to get feedback from faculty members regarding recommendations for the blueprint task force. We discussed the disparity between the professional development training/updates required for full-time and adjunct faculty and how to improve retention and graduation rates. I was disappointed in how few faculty members actually attended the meeting.
Guidance Counselor Update (2/11/15) - I participated in the Sussex County High School Counselor Breakfast, which is an opportunity for the guidance counselors in each school district to learn about Delaware Tech offerings and analyze data regarding their students’ performance on the College Placement Test. In this meeting I also served as a panel member for college readiness. It is clear that the high school counselors want to help students better prepare for college and avoid developmental coursework because they were very interested in dual enrollment opportunities and understanding the College’s policy regarding course placement based on Smarter Balanced Assessment scores. As a result of this meeting, I realized that Delaware Tech needs to do a better job of promoting our connected degrees because we are still viewed by the community as a source of vocational training.

Leadership characteristics enhanced:
The leadership characteristic that was
enhanced through this activity was #13 - Is sensitive to stakeholder needs,
flexible, and proactive. As leaders it is really important that we listen to
our stakeholders and respond to their feedback in way that is mutually
beneficial. The College is lucky to have
such a broad group of people that care about our students and programs enough
to provide such support.
